WHY WE NEED FUNDING
As you may know, Canada does not have a strong support program for amateur sports. Muay Thai, is in it's infancy as a recognized sport. There are many misconceptions about Muay Thai that it is brutal and savage. which prevents it from obtaining national support. Muay Thai at it's core is about respect and work ethic.
Muay Thai was recently recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a sport to be included in the Olympics. With this recognition, comes a clear road for our young athletes to fulfill their dreams of representing Canada to compete in Muay Thai. The current highst level of international amateur Muay Thai competition is called the International Federation of Muay Thai Asociations (IFMA). This will be a precursor for athletes to participate in the Olympics. Currenlty, countries from around the world send their athletes to compete in IFMA, including USA, UK, France, Vietnam, Thailand, Canada, etc. This is a very prestigious event and it is every athlete's dream to compete at this level. With this comes a high amount of expenses for the athletes and the coaches. An athlete must first compete in several competitions in order to be recognized by the IFMA Team Canada scouters. These competitions can be held locally, out of province or even abroad. There are significant costs associated with registering for each competition, commuting to the location and staying at these places. Every athlete is also required to have a coach accompany them to corner them during the competition. These expenses are not supported by any government program, the athlete and coach must pay this out of their own pocket.
For example, in 2023, the IFMA World Youth Championships will be held in Antalya, Turkey. The main expenses are: registration fee to participate in the event; cost of staying at the IFMA host hotel for the duration of the event (which is 10 night) ; and flights to Turkey. We have an athlete that has been selected to represent Team Canada. These are the types of expenses the athlete and coach must pay.
